Architects and Other Specifiers
TigerBoard panels are designed for roof and wall sheathing in residential and commercial wood-frame construction.
TigerBoard is an oriented structural straw board (OSSB), engineered for strength and made from agricultural waste wheat straw with formaldehyde-free (MDI) resin binders.
TigerBoard will have an Exposure 1 bond durability classification, and be Structural-1 rated. It will be available in 4’ x 8’ panels and manufactured to 7/16” thickness with a 24/16 span rating.
The panels will be manufactured in conformance with the PS 2-04 structural standard, in addition to panel durability tests prescribed in AC307, ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for OSSB. TigerBoard will be certified by TECO, a qualified third-party inspection and testing agency, recognized by the model building codes.
TigerBoard will provide the structural integrity and functionality of similarly rated plywood and OSB, with improved performance and value:
- Its engineering and the natural attributes of wheat straw make TigerBoard stronger yet lighter, with improved dimensional stability, and more water-, fire- and termite-resistant than wood-based alternatives.
- TigerBoard panels are designed for strength:
- Wheat straw fibers are split longitudinally to allow for an even distribution of binders on all strand surfaces, while maintaining fiber length for a high strength-to-stiffness ratio.
- Layers of fibers are oriented to increase bending stiffness action.
- Fibers of wood used to produce plywood and OSB have comparable tensile strength to wheat straw fibers. However, individual wheat straw fibers, when blended with MDI and subjected to heat and pressure, inter-weave (unlike wood strands), producing a stronger panel than wood-based counterparts.
TigerBoard will also provide architects and specifiers with a tree-free building material to support sustainable industry practices and to help meet the increasing demand for green building design and materials:
- TigerBoard conserves our forests while transforming waste wheat straw into a structural-grade building product that creates economic, social, and environmental value.
- TigerBoard will help project teams meet sustainable design criteria for green building programs, including the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) rating system:
- Material & Resources credit (rapidly renewable materials)
- Indoor Environmental Quality credit (low-emitting materials)
TigerBoard will be backed by a 50-year warranty. |
