Building the Future:
Our Commitment to Sustainability
Above Board Technologies is a manufacturer of construction products made from sustainable, non-wood fibers. Above Board strives to lessen the impact of the building industry on our forests.
Above Board is utilizing a patented technology that allows the manufacture of structural panels from waste wheat straw. Its TigerBoard product is the first “tree free” structural panel on the market.
Above Board is using better technology to build a better future. Transforming waste wheat straw into a structural-grade building product creates economic, social, and environmental value.
Above Board plans to develop a broad range of building products made from non-wood fibers and to explore innovations that will drive the building industry towards a sustainable future.
TigerBoard’s Green Attributes
TigerBoard conserves our dwindling forests by using an agricultural waste product rather than wood.
TigerBoard provides a sustainable solution to an agricultural disposal problem. Waste wheat straw is abundant and the typical method for disposing of it is to burn it, which creates CO2 emissions. Transforming waste wheat straw into a structural-grade building product creates economic, social, and environmental value.
TigerBoard’s production process also uses less energy than is required for manufacturing wood-based alternatives. Additionally, Above Board’s product is made with a formaldehyde-free resin binder, thereby helping to protect indoor air quality.
TigerBoard’s Durability and Performance Attributes
TigerBoard is the first structural panel of its kind. TigerBoard, generically named oriented structural strawboard (OSSB), has the physical and structural properties of its wood-based counterparts, OSB and plywood.
TigerBoard is designed for roof and wall sheathing in residential and commercial wood-frame construction and is designed to meet the standards for Exposure 1 and Structural 1 sheathing. But TigerBoard has benefits that go beyond these classifications. TigerBoard is engineered for strength and durability and provides improved value and performance over its wood-based counterparts. Its engineering and the natural attributes of wheat straw make TigerBoard stronger yet lighter, with improved dimensional stability, and more water-, fire- and termite-resistant than wood-based alternatives.
TigerBoard provides the building industry with a tree-free building material to support sustainable industry practices and to meet the increasing demand for green building products.
Environmental Certifications
Following testing and structural certification, TigerBoard will be submitted for certification from Scientific Certification Systems in two categories:
- Indoor Air Quality Performance—Certifies that products used within an enclosed indoor environment demonstrate compliance with indoor air emissions criteria.
- Material Content— Certifies claims such as agricultural waste, organic fiber, bio-based, or rapidly renewable content of materials.
TigerBoard and Green Building Programs
The use of TigerBoard will help project teams meet sustainable design criteria for green building programs, including the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system:
- Material & Resources section: rapidly renewable materials credit
- Indoor Environmental Quality section: low-emitting materials credit
Green Building Affiliations
Above Board Technologies is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable building design and construction. The USGBC developed and administers the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) building rating systems.
Above Board will soon be submitting its application for membership at Build It Green, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote healthy, energy-efficient, and resource-efficient buildings in California.
